Description
The Advanced Trauma Life Support® Course provides the participant with a safe, reliable method for immediate management of the injured patient and the basic knowledge necessary to:

The purpose of this course is to orient the participants to the initial assessment and management of the trauma patient. In general, the content and skills presented in the materials are designed to assist doctors in providing emergency care for the trauma patient. The concept of the ‘golden hour” emphasizes the urgency necessary for successful management to maximize outcome of the injured patient and is not intended to imply a “fixed’ time period of 60 minutes. The ATLS® Course provides the essential information and skills that the doctor may apply to the identification and treatment of life-threatening or potentially life-threatening injuries.

The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma recognizes the benefits and role of trained individuals who are not doctors in the care of the trauma patient.  However, several programs have been developed by other organizations with this intent (e.g., PreHospital Trauma Life Support for EMS personnel, TNCC or ATCN for nurses).  These individuals are encouraged to participate in courses designed for them.

Prerequisites
The American College of Surgeons specifies that the course is intended for doctors (MD, DO).

Dentists or oral/maxillofacial surgeons (DDS, DMD) who are actively and directly involved with the management of trauma patients may actively participate in the ATLS Student Course, but the number who may attend any one offering is limited.

Physician extenders (PA, NP) who are actively and directly involved with the management of trauma patients may be granted permission to audit the course (with no expectation for credit) only after special written permission is obtained in advance from the Chairman of the NJ Committee on Trauma and the Course Director.
