EMS & Trauma Education
Basic Life Support for Healthcare
Providers RENEWAL
(Professional-level CPR)
Credit
The NJDOH&SS-OEMS allows EMTs
to individually apply for 2 elective CEU
per calendar year
for
CPR renewal.
Description
Students must pass both a skills and written test
to
complete the course and receive a completion card good for two
years. There are two methods for obtaining BLS
for
Healthcare Providers
renewal:
Classroom-Based Renewal
Because the content was updated and the new class is
approximately the same length as a renewal, we are offering the new
provider class as a renewal with a choice of two days each month.
This classroom-based course is designed to meet the
needs of healthcare
professionals who respond to cardiac and respiratory emergencies.
It teaches the following according to the newly released 2005 AHA
Guidelines for Emergency Cardiovascular Care:
- The steps of 1- and 2-rescuer CPR for adult, child, and
infant victims
- Usage of barrier devices and bag-mask ventilation
- Safe utilization of an automated external defibrillator
(AED) for adults and children over 1 year of age
- Signs and actions for severe airway obstruction in
responsive and unresponsive victims
- The links in the Chain of Survival and their importance
- Signs of cardiac arrest, choking, stroke, heart attack
Internet-Based On-line Renewal
Students must have a valid professional-level CPR card (as
described
in our prerequisites below).
First, purchase and complete the AHA-sponsored
Internet-based training module. Once the online portion of
the course has been completed, you then present both your current card
and
the certificate of completion to us then enroll for a skills
validation session on the dates listed. After you have completed
both
sections of the
process, you will be issued an American Heart Association BLS for
Healthcare Providers card. The skills validation must be
completed before the expiration date on your CPR card or 60 days from
completion of the on-line coursework, whichever comes first.
Prerequisites
- A current American Heart Association BLS for the
Healthcare
Providers card, an American Red Cross Professional Rescuer card or
professional
level CPR certification from the National Safety Council are
required.
- Students must be physically able to perform all
skills
on a training manikin, which can be strenuous when done
correctly. The
American Heart Association requires that students adequately
demonstrate all skills to their guidelines in order to complete the
course.
- Students enrolling for the skills validation
after the on-line renewal
must submit proof of completion for the on-line training at the time of
registration.
