Description
Instructors play an important role in the
American
Heart
Association's Chain
of Survival. The purpose of this course is to
provide
candidates
the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to
instruct
and evaluate potential BLS providers. The course provides
candidates
with:
- AHA Emergency
Cardiovascular
Care (ECC) educational philosophy and national AHA policies
and
procedures
affecting all ECC instructors,
- Sufficient background
information for
comprehension
of BLS
subject matter,
- Information on teaching
methods,
- An understanding of the
educational aids
available
for teaching
provider courses,
- The opportunity to develop
effective
presentation
abilities.
Course completion requires students to
complete the
workshop
(which includes it own written, skill and mock teaching evaluations)
and
successfully teach in at least one course while being monitored by an
Training Center Faculty or AHA Regional Faculty member within 90 days
of the
workshop.
Prerequisites
- Current BLS for Healthcare
Providers
course completion card at the time of the workshop
- Throrough mastery of the
information and skills
for
BLS according
to the current ECC Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
- A completed AHA
Instructor Candidate Application,
signed by a Training Center (TC) Coordinator, or a letter from a TC
Coordinator indicating that the candidate will be affiliating as an
instructor with that TC
- Willingness and desire to
teach in accordance
with
the scientific
and program guidelines of the AHA
- Each candidate must make a
commitment to teach
two
courses
per year according to the AHA guidelines
- Each candidate must
demonstrate model
instructor-level BLS
provider skills (including operation of automated external
defibrillator,
pocket mask, and bag-mask device) and pass the current BLS for
Healthcare
Providers written exam with a score of at least 90% at a special
screening
session before the workshop begins. Candidates who do not
pass
the
prescreening evaluations will not continue with the rest of the
workshop
and will receive a partial refund.

$175 includes tuition, student materials,

Important
Information
- Note registration deadline
for each offering.
- Candidates are strongly
advised to prepare for
the
pre-screening
session with their sponsoring Training Center. Candidates
must
demonstrate
well-polished, instructor-level proficiency with skills and
knowledge of the subject
matter--well beyond that of the routine provider.
- Candidates must be
physically able to
demonstrate
all BLS
skills and techniques on training manikins during the entire course.
- The workshop requires
candidates to be
evaluated
while presenting
short lectures and skill lessons to a group.
