NJSP Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Emergency Response Course--Awareness

Credit
This course has been approved for 4.0 elective CEUs for NJ EMTs by the NJDOH&SS-OEMS.  Paramedics should contact their clinical coordinator for CEU approval.  Nursing contact hours have been applied for.

Description
This entry-level course explains what hazardous materials incidents are, how to detect their presence, and the role of a first responders in these situations,  Concepts of classification and levels of incidents and the role of an incident command system (ICS) are presented.  Also covered are the roles and notification requirements of municipal, county and state organizations. This course is the basic prerequisite for all levels of hazardous materials training.  A certificate is provided by the NJ State Police after course completion.

Prerequisites
There are no formal prerequisites.  Students should be familiar with the environments and situations where emergency services operate.  The intended audience includes public safety, fire, EMS, and emergency department personnel.
